The Easy I-10 Stop Between Jacksonville and Pensacola

Tallahassee sits close to the halfway point of I-10 between Jacksonville and Pensacola. Here's why Exit 196 makes an easy overnight stop.

Take Exit 196. That's Capital Circle NW, and we're right off it at 1695 Capital Cir NW. No downtown traffic, no garage, no hunting for a spot.

Where Tallahassee falls on the drive

Exit numbers on Florida's I-10 follow the mile markers, so the math is easy. Exit 196 is about 166 miles from the last exit in Jacksonville (Exit 362) and about 184 miles from Exit 12, where I-110 heads into Pensacola. Either way, Tallahassee is close to halfway.

Tallahassee has four I-10 exits: 196, 199, 203 and 209. Ours is the westernmost. Coming from Jacksonville, you'll pass the other three first. Coming from Pensacola, it's the next exit after US 90 at Exit 192.

One thing that catches people out is the time zone. Pensacola and the western Panhandle are on Central time, and Tallahassee is on Eastern. The line follows the Apalachicola River, west of town. Heading east, you lose an hour. Heading west, you get it back. Worth knowing when you're planning around a 3 PM check-in.

Why we make an easy stop

  • Free on-site parking. Pull in, park, walk in.
  • Self check-in. Check-in starts at 3 PM, and the front desk is staffed 24/7, so a late arrival after a long day on the road is fine.
  • Dinner without getting back in the car. The Café is open 24 hours with Lucky Goat coffee, breakfast sandwiches and burritos warmed up for a fee, plus pizza in the evening. The Marketplace has ramen and ready meals, and there's a guest microwave.
  • A bed worth stopping for. Luxury four-star mattresses and pillows in every room. Guests bring up the beds in their reviews more than almost anything else.
  • Breakfast before you go. Free continental breakfast: waffles, eggs, fruit, cereal and juice. Then a coffee for the road.
  • The dog can come. Dogs are welcome for $55 per night.
  • A swim after the drive. The outdoor plunge pool is open sunrise to sunset in the warm months and closed when it's cold.

Leaving in the morning

Checkout is 11 AM. If you want a slower start, late checkout is $25 for 1 PM, $50 for 2 PM and $75 for 3 PM.

Getting in early instead? If you've driven through the night or left at dawn, early check-in depends on a room being ready: $100 from 7:00 to 10:59 AM, $50 from 11:00 AM to 1:59 PM, and $25 from 2:00 to 3:00 PM.

If you decide to stay a day

Plenty of people plan one night and stay two. FSU is about 10 minutes away, FAMU about 5, and the airport about 12, if someone's flying in to meet you.
